Owners Jeff and Gretel Norgeot have always had a passion for growing local produce in an environmentally consicious way. Checkerberry Farm originated under the name Homespun in 1995, and quickly joined the Orleans Farmer's Market the second year it was in action. Starting humbly with a backyard garden, a few beehives, and a love of the land, Gretel and Jeff evolved a hobby into a way of life.
With the purchase of a larger parcel of land in 1999 Checkerberry Farm started its venture into what it is today: a family run, devoted business that serves the community for three full seasons out of the year.
Master Gardener Gretel Norgeot is the driving force behind the agricultural aspects, with husband Jeff always ready to jump on a tractor to plow a field or till in some mulch. Over the years they have welcomed their middle daughter, Marie, into the business, generously allowing her to farm her own field and to get her hands dirty.
Gretel and Marie are at the Orleans Farmer's Market every Saturday morning, from eight to noon, between early May and late November. Gretel has been a vendor for seventeen consecutive years, and knows fully well how important it is to provide the community she was raised in with quality produce at reasonable prices. Checkerberry Farm's produce is grown without chemical additives or fertilizers. The only amendments used are from organic matter- mainly decomposed leaf mulch, grass clippings, and hay.
Farming has taken a little trial and error, but it's always been an enjoyble experienc-, where the birds are singing and the breeze is blowing, with a little sun on your back and some dirt on your hands.
Come see us at the market!
